Once a year it is a great idea to organize your clothing closet. Clothes tend to multiply no matter who you are. Whether you are that business guy who likes ties or can never have enough white button up shirts, or that woman who keeps sizes 1-16. We all need to de-clutter the closet.

The closet is one of the first things we see each day. How can you be productive at work if you can’t find a shirt that is clean or ironed to match your pants (that went out of style 9 years ago)?. How can you lead a balanced and intentional life of calm and serenity if you have 9 single flip flops ?

Just for today, go through every square inch of your closet and GET RID of all your stained, single, hopelessly outdated, or way tooooo small outfits and shoes. Grab a bunch of those giant black garbage bags and toss it all in. If you can’t decide, then part with it. Then immediately take those giant bags to goodwill or any donation drop off. Immediately. Do not ever look into that bag or think about what you got rid of.

Now you are ready for the new you!  Stay tuned on how to organize what you have left.

I have never owned a dog until four months ago. I always thought they would be too much work. Well, they are. But it’s well worth it. Anyhow, prior to getting a dog, I always wondered (yes- I will admit it! – and even criticized) how people found it was acceptable to have dog toys and BONES lying around their homes.

The homes I am talking about we’re the ones that were de-cluttered and organized. Even if they had a business out of their home, everything seemed balanced and ran in a productive manner– Except for the BONE.

How on earth do we feel this is acceptable. A bone is an animal part. A body part. Part of something that was once living. And there it is lying in the middle of a kitchen or a living room.

Then it hit me. The bones become invisible to the dog owner! I am not kidding. Up to 3 bones at a time can camouflage themselves, and yes, become undetectable to the human eye of someone who Owens and loves a dog.

The only answer I have come up with is to get an attractive basket and putti in a hidden space in my living area. Then several times a day I make an extremely concerted effort to detect these bones, and put them in an organized fashion into this basket. But mind you, this is a tough task. It takes commitment and focus.  It’s like finding one of those bugs that look like leave on a plant. It can be done- but it takes effort.

Good luck to you and your pooch. Don’t worry, if I come to your home and there are bones lying around, chances are I won’t see them anymore!

Clutter comes in many forms. Often ‘Collections’ can cause clutter. This is especially true if they are sprawled out all over the place or put in numerous bins and boxes.

If you own a collection of some sort, why not organize it, AND enjoy it? That way, you appear to have a balanced approach to your hobby or inheritance, and you can still go on having a de-cluttered home or business and be productive.

I have a collection of beach glass. I love the stuff. It’s probably a good thing I moved from California to Ohio, or I would be forced to find a new hobby. I display it throughout my home. My son has an an antique fishing lure collection. My other son has his great- grandfathers and Grandpas Police and Fireman badges. These have been displayed in their bedroom in shadow boxes.

Whatever your collection, I suggest to find a way to incorporate it into your home or business decor. Especially if you love it. For those of you who don’t love it- I suggest reading some of my previous blogs on parting with things.

By now most of us either have our taxes done, or we are scrambling to get everything into our accountants. Regardless, it is time to make a commitments to implement a system so that next year the process is much easier and have that productive and balanced home or business.

When beginning, simply determine your important categories. Your accountant can help you with this.  Next, de-clutter anything you dont need from last year. You may either make files or put information into envelopes or boxes. Make sure they are labeled so that things are filed in an organized fashion. Categories should include at least:expenses, ( these can be subcategorized into detailed categories), mileage, donations, income, bills.

For a home or a large business, you may have more categories. If you start as you mean to go on, when January 2014 rolls around, you, and your accountant will be quite happy!

For those of you who live in cooler climates, there is a definite ritual or act of balance that takes place in the spring. The winter ‘stuff’ is no longer needed, so it’s time to put it all away and de-clutter it, while getting out the summer stuff. Although this is a very exciting time, you will be much happier and productive next fall if you put things away in an organized manner in your home or business, and implement systems in order to be productive in your life:
1. Snow gear gets laundered or dry cleaned and put in a sealed or dry spot.
2. Heavy comforters and blankets need the same attention.
3. Flannel sheets get laundered. Folded and labeled.
4. Hats, mittens, scarves and ear muffs get laundered and stored according to category.
5. Heavy clothing such as sweaters and long underwire get cleaned and stored. Wool items or other natural clothing get sealed in plastic or a container.
6. Shovels, scrapers and windshield fluid and salt gets put where they live over the summer. Make sure they are together, and out of the way
7. Snow blowers get the oil drained and cleaned up.
8. Left over firewood gets stacked and covered for next winter
9. Hot chocolate and marshmallows get put into the camping section.
10. Last but not least, remember to do a happy dance of gratitude for the sun!

It’s funny how everything in life fits together in some way. I have begun the practice of yoga.

As a Professional Organizer I am always very observant of the businesses I frequent.  Are they de-cluttered? Are they Organized? Is there business run in an organized fashion? Have they created systems so it runs smoothly? If yes, then I feel comfortable enough to spend time there.

Cleveland Yoga has offered this, and much more.  Because I am now pausing long enough each day, I am able to focus more on my home and business.  I am maintaining things more easily, and being a lot more productive each day.  I am creating more balance in my home and business by creating more balance in my body by practicing yoga.  It all fits together!

Today my instructor told us something that will stick with me forever.  As a matter of fact, I’ve asked her if I can use it in my presentation as it was so similar to the Profession of Organizing.  As we were opening hip flexors she said ‘Your hips are like the junk drawers of your body- all of your ‘stuff’ goes there to die’.

Today I will be cleaning out the junk drawers in my home, since my body is done for the day.

Regardless if you own a home or a business, PAPER is a major problem!

In order to have a balanced environment, a productive life, or an organized home, you must create systems that keep you from accumulating paper.

The first step is to ‘de-clutter’ all of that paper you have right now.

The next steps:

  • Don’t bring it in- recycle or throw directly from the letter box
  • Don’t be tempted to bring in flyers or post cards when you are out and about
  • Don’t subscribe to magazines or catalogs.  Many libraries have these subscriptions for free online
  • Address paperwork immediately- and archive, file, or recycle
  • Make sure you have a ‘home’ or a file for anything you need to keep

Remember, it’s easy to begin to feel overwhelmed with papers.  Make a commitment to deal with them immediately.  This will save a lot of time, and a lot of headache.

A topic that has been hot for years has been  De-Cluttering and Organizing your home or your business.  Often books are purchased showing you how to create systems or balance in your life.

Why must we continue with this topic?

We have TO MUCH STUFF! We find it hard to lead a productive and serene life because of the clutter.

Today, let’s look at the WHY?

  • What is it about your life-style that brings in too much clutter?
  • What habits have you adopted to accumulate stuff?
  • What is your routine? (Home shopping online?)
  • How  do you spend money? Why do your spend money?
  • What are the means to which the ‘stuff’ comes into your home?

Hopefully these questions will create some self introspection.  It’s just as important to understand WHY the stuff comes into our lives, as it is to de-clutter it!

Clutter

It’s Spring Time.  This is the time of the year I begin to notice all of the clutter.  I have forced to admit that I have accumulated too much ‘stuff’ and am living a less than productive life.  Although I have maintained my home and my business over these wintery months, it is time to create some balance.

How will I begin to de-clutter? and to organize my home and organize my business?

One step at a time!

  • Today I went through my ‘things to file’ box- and purged and filed
  • I went through my pile of paperwork (tidy and neat as it is, it is still a pile)
  • I went through my file cabinet- purged and updated it.
  • I went through our junk drawer.
  • I addressed recipes, magazines and catalogs- most got recycled.
  • I also updated the family calendar.
  • I created systems for all of our new paperwork coming into our home, and all of my archived businesses paperwork.

Five hours later- I am completely finished! What a weight off of my shoulders.

I encourage all of  you to just jump in and get it done. It was harder thinking about having to do it, than actually doing it.

Good Luck!
